FROM MISSIONARY HOTEL TO

RELAXED LUXURY AND HIGH QUALITY

In 1904 the property was built by Frederik Lehmann Weber and was named Kogtvedhus. In 1906 the place was sold to the Hvidkilde Estate. For the next 10 years, the place was used as residence for the widow Anna Ahlefeldt-Laurvig-Lehn. The Countess moved in with a housekeeping staff of 16-18 service people taking care of housekeeping, riding horses, farmland and the entire estate. The Countess named it Stella Maris - which in Latin means the star of the sea. Hvidkilde Estate sold of the estate in 1916 to a businessman from Zealand who occupied the estate as his private summer residence. In 1927, Stella Maris was opened for the first time for anything but pure private residence. Aage W. Tuxen, Head of the Navigation School in Svendborg, bought the place and opened a school for people who wanted to emigrate and learn languages. Since then it was adapted into a summer hotel.

In 1935, a young deacon Kresten Christensen bought Stella Maris, making it a Christian recreation home and summer hotel.

In 1967, Indre Mission bought Stella Maris. Indre Mission is an independent revival movement within the Danish Lutheran church. It was adapted into a mission hotel, and served as a place of daily worship and prayer. The most important purpose for Stella Maris during these years was to organize events where preaching the Word of God was the supporting element. The mission hotel served no alcohol. Amongst others, business travellers were able to be away from home without facing the temptation of alcohol.  The final sale of Hotel Stella Maris marks the end of an era, as she was the last mission hotel in Denmark.

Hotel Stella Maris of today has no reminiscence of the strict rules of Indre Mission. The hotel is a private enterprise with both wine in the basement and cocktails at the bar. Hotel Stella Maris opened on March 1, 2014 with 36 luxurious rooms, conference facilities, lounge, bar, terrace, wine cellar and restaurant.
